What is
CAFE
Tazewell?
CAFE
Tazewell or Communities Against Fraud and Exploitation is a program
created by the Tazewell County
State's Attorney's office as a
community partnership to prevent fraud and exploitation in Tazewell County.
The purpose of our program is to educate the people of Tazewell County
about fraud to better increase detection and reporting of con artists
and identity thieves.
Just as a group of folks
might meet at a café to solve problems over a cup of coffee,
CAFE
Tazewell will allow groups to meet and discuss ways to combat fraud and
exploitation in our community
Fraud and financial
exploitation have become a growing problem at both the national and
local levels. We believe it
is important to provide information to seniors and others that can be
useful to protect themselves from becoming victims of these crimes.
Communities Against Fraud and Exploitation (CAFE)
was modeled after a successful program that originated in Denver, Colorado,
that focused on protecting seniors from these crimes.
Our program places an emphasis on seniors but will be open to all
citizens. The program is fairly simple.
Our office has made contact with over 300 organizations in
Tazewell
County including churches,
retiree associations, and local civic groups.
Those groups that have agreed to partner up with our program are
periodically provided via e-mail with Fraud Alert Newsletters.
The Newsletters are then posted on bulletin boards, copied and
inserted in bulletins/newsletters, or otherwise passed on to group
members. These Fraud Alerts
communicate current scams as law enforcement become aware of them, and
also include tips and reminders to protect the community from identity
theft and other fraudulent scams.
CAFE
Tazewell also offers presentations on these topics for those communities
interested in hosting a seminar.
