What to do if you are a victim

As part of our services through CAFE Tazewell our office has staff that is available to answer any questions and help with the reporting process if needed.  Contact us by email or phone.

 

ID Theft

Internet Crimes

 

 If you have become a victim of identity theft:

 

  1. Get a copy of your credit report online at annualcreditreport.com (free once a year)

 

  1. File a local police report **ask for a copy or get the report number for your records**

 

  1. Contact the FTC and file a complaint:
    1. Online at http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/idtheft/consumers/filing-a-report.html
    2. Or call the hotline at 1-877-ID-Theft (438-4338)

**Don’t forget to make a copy or write down the report number for your records.

 

  1. Contact the credit bureaus to flag your account.

**Contact one of the three and the others will be notified by the bureau you selected.

 

    1. Equifax: 1-800-525-6285
    2. Experian: 1-888-397-3742
    3. TransUnion: 1-800-680-7289

 

  1. Contact each creditor that you believe to have suspicious activity.

 

  1. Keep a log of all the people you speak with, their phone numbers, and any report numbers. **always keep copies of documentation you send.

 

 Internet Crimes

 

 If you are a victim of any other internet crime, including but not limited to,    lotteries, advance-fee schemes, non-delivery of goods or services, computer hacking, or employment/business opportunity schemes. Learn More

 

    File a Complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov  *be sure to keep a copy of the form for your own records.
