CENSUS 2010
|
CENSUS 2010 – EASY/SAFE/IMPORTANT
|
| Tazewell County has partnered with the U.S.
Census Bureau to help raise awareness of the 2010 Census.
Participating in the Census is important due to federal funding
that is distributed to states and communities based on
population. In fact, more than $300 billion in federal money is
distributed each year based on census population figures. By
completing your census questionnaire, you ensure that many of
your tax dollars are returned to your community in the form of
critical services provided to you and your family. It you are
not counted, the community will lose valuable services. The
facts about the nation’s population gathered in the census will
directly shape decisions and funding for public health,
neighborhood improvements, transportation, education and much
more. |
|
This Census is also important for equal representation. The
U.S. Constitution requires a national census once every 10 years
to count the population and determine the number of seats each
state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives. Census
figures are used to the determine representation at the local
and state levels too.

THE CENSUS – A SNAPSHOT
|
What: The census is a count of everyone residing in the
United States
Who: All U.S. residents mush be counted – citizens and
non-citizens alike
When: You will receive your census questionnaire in March
of 2010 either by U.S. Mail or hand deliver.
Where: You should be counted in the residence in which
you live and sleep most of the time. For example, students
attending college “away from home” should complete a
questionnaire at their college residence.
For more information on where you should be counted please read
the
information brochure.
How: You should complete and mail back your questionnaire
upon receipt. Households that do not respond may receive a
replacement questionnaire in early April. Census takers will
visit households that do not return questionnaires to take a
count in person. However, taking counts in person is very time
consuming and is costly to taxpayers.
|
THE QUESTIONNAIRE – 10 QUESTIONS/10 MINUTES
|
|
With only 10 questions, the 2010 Census questionnaire is one of
the shortest questionnaires in history and takes about 10
minutes to complete. You will be asked to provide important
demographic information, including your address, and the names,
genders, ages and races of others living in the household. |
|
Your responses are completely confidential. By law, the Census
Bureau cannot share an individual’s responses with anyone,
